Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Eppa Rixey was born in Culpeper on May 3, 1891. His career spanned 21 years in the National League, where he played for both the Philadelphia Phillies and the Cincinnati Reds. His 266 victories were the most by a left-hander in the history of the National League, until his record was surpassed in 1959 by Warren Spahn. In all, he pitched in 692 games, won 266 and lost 251 for an average of .515. In 1963, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
