Join Historic Germanna Education Manager Shannon Doherty for our first Evening with Germanna of this year! On Thursday, February 29 (yes, it is a leap year!) at 7pm ET on Zoom, Shannon will explore the fascinating yet often untold story of slavery, emancipation, and the Union Army in Culpeper County during the Civil War.
When studying the Civil War, we are often asked the question: “Who freed the slaves?” This program will show that this question is not easily answered. We are often taught that the Emancipation Proclamation is the end-all, be-all of the ending of slavery during the war. While the Emancipation Proclamation was hugely important, emancipation was happening on the ground within weeks of the opening shots of the war. Enslaved individuals, Union soldiers, Abraham Lincoln, and Congress all played a role in the ever-changing, uncertain drama of emancipation. Culpeper County, as one of the Virginia counties most impacted by war, had its own version of this drama play out.
Using the story of Salubria as a window into the past, Shannon will shed light on this story — and the people who sacrificed to ensure the promise that all men were created equal.
