Take a Piece of the Past with You
Before you leave town, stop by the Museum of Culpeper History gift shop or browse the independent stores along Main Street. From Civil War books to locally made artisan goods, you’ll find something special to bring home as a reminder of the weekend.
Retrace History at Civil War Sites and Battlefield Trails
Take a short drive beyond downtown to discover sites from the Civil War, marked by cannons and interpretive signage.
- Brandy Station Battlefield: Nestled in the scenic countryside, this portion of Culpeper Battlefields State Park once saw 21,000 troops clash in the largest cavalry battle ever fought in the Western Hemisphere, a significant part of the Gettysburg Campaign. Stroll along a quiet wildflower-lined trail as eastern bluebirds and butterflies drift past. Choose from Buford’s Knoll Battlefield Trail (2.5 miles), St. James Church Battlefield Trail (.75 miles), or the Fleetwood Hill Battlefield Trail (.25 miles).
- The Graffiti House: This small, two-story building was likely used as a hospital by both Union and Confederate forces. Hospitalized soldiers, or others passing through town, left their stories on the walls. Drawings, signatures, and notes bring the Civil War startlingly close, making it feel as though you’re standing in history. Read more about the Graffiti House here.
- Kelly’s Ford: Tucked along the south bank of the Rappahannock River, this site is part of the Civil War Trail. Today, the roar of cannon fire is long gone, and it has become an ideal place for quiet reflection. Spend time on the boat landing, watching for bald eagles, kingfishers and osprey.
