Culpeper draws visitors of all kinds to enjoy its small-town charm, rural mountain landscapes, and vibrant community. These qualities also make the area a prime destination for bikers and cyclists. Here is a look into the shops, riding groups, and routes available to bikers to help you plan your next adventure in Culpeper.
Cycling in Culpeper
I spoke with Joe White, a local cyclist, photographer, and president of the Culpeper Area Mountain Biking Organization, to learn more about what makes Culpeper ideal for cyclists. He remarked, “Culpeper has everything that cyclists would want: low traffic roads, scenic views, and plenty of wineries and breweries to enjoy after a ride.” This blog highlights the breweries, wineries, and distilleries in the area that would make the perfect pit stop on your route through Culpeper.
The major cycling event of the year is The Culpeper Annual Cycling Century and Tour, run by Blue Ridge Cyclery every October. Offering options of 30, 60, and 100-mile routes, riders of all abilities are welcome to enjoy the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and connect with Culpeper’s community of cyclists.
Cycling in Culpeper is as much a social activity as it is an athletic one. If you’re in town on a Wednesday, join the Wednesday Night Ride, a local group that explores different parts of the county each week. The start time is determined by the sunset and weather conditions, and routes typically span around 20 miles. You can find the schedule here.
If you’re looking for something a bit further off the beaten path, check out the Culpeper Area Mountain Biking Organization (CAMBO). Located on Deer Springs Farm, CAMBO offers 10 miles of dedicated mountain biking trails and frequently organizes group rides. Joe White is proud of how the organization has created an environment for all riders, particularly beginners and female cyclists, to feel safe and supported on the trails. Access to the mountain biking trails is available through membership only. Find more information on the CAMBO website.
Fulton Found: A Motorcycle Haven in Culpeper
For motorcycle enthusiasts, stop in to the newly opened Fulton Moto, an expertly curated motorcycle shop on historic Davis Street. The shop offers riding gear, apparel, custom bikes, and even seasonal motorcycle rentals.
Fulton Moto also hosts bimonthly Bike & Coffee events (April – October) at the neighboring Raven’s Nest coffee shop.
Fulton Moto is an extension of Fulton Found, a shop of men’s lifestyle products and one of the many unique independent shops in Culpeper.
Biking on nearby Skyline Drive
Shenandoah National Park is a major draw for visitors coming to Culpeper, and Skyline Drive offers one of the most scenic biking experiences in the area. The closest entrance to the park from Culpeper is the Thornton Gap Entrance, about half an hour away. Check the National Park Service website for more information on the rules and regulations for cycling in Shenandoah.
