Culpeper’s Greatest Preacher: John A. Broadus

April 22 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Church

As Culpeper reflects on its rich history and prepares to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, the community is invited to rediscover one of its most influential native sons. “Culpeper’s Greatest Preacher” will be held on April 22 at noon at Culpeper Baptist Church, highlighting the life and legacy of John A. Broadus—a figure whose impact on preaching, education, and Southern life continues to be felt today.

Born in Culpeper, Broadus rose to national prominence in the nineteenth century as a gifted preacher, respected scholar, and influential leader among Baptists. Culpeper was the starting point of a life that would help shape the future of American religious life.

The event will feature guest speaker Dr. Eric Smith, author of Between Worlds: John A. Broadus, the Southern Baptist Seminary, and the Prospects of the New South. Dr. Smith will bring Broadus’s story to life, exploring how a young man from Culpeper became a central figure during one of the most transformative periods in American history.
Broadus is perhaps best known as a cofounder of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Beyond his institutional contributions, he was widely recognized for his excellence in preaching and his influence on generations of ministers through his teaching and writing.

Living through the turmoil of the American Civil War and the complex years that followed, Broadus helped guide both church and society through the transition from the Old South to the New South. His leadership during this time reflects the broader story of a region—and a nation—grappling with change, identity, and hope for the future.
