At the Virginia Convention held May 1775, the Colony of Virginia was divided into 16 districts and each district was instructed to raise and discipline a battalion of men to march at a minute’s notice. Culpeper, Fauquier, and Orange forming one district raised a cadre of 350 men organized and trained by July 17, 1775. On Oct. 20, 1775, the battalion was reported within a few hours’ march to Williamsburg by Purdie’s Va. Gazette, and on Oct. 23, 1775, the Captains of the Culpeper Minute Battalion were definitely in Williamsburg starting to draw equipment 249 years ago.
