St. Stephens Episcopal Church Cemetery
Address: 115 N. East St. Culpeper, VA 22701

Built circa 1821 St. Stephens Church is the oldest church found in downtown Culpeper. The land was given to the church by Brigadier General Edward Stevens who gave an acre of ground “adjoining the town of Fairfax to build a church thereon to the Trustees of the Protestant Episcopal Church”. According to tradition, it was given in memory of his young son. General J.E.B. Stuart attended church here in 1863 (winter encampment). Silver communion service dates from 1883. On the walk way of the church there are four bricks of historic significance from the old church at Jamestown and the site of the first church in Rappahannock near Slate Mills.
Stories have been told over the years of a young woman that haunts the graveyard next to the church. Sometimes called the White Lady. She has been seen wearing a long white gown, possibly a wedding dress, wondering through the graveyard at night. She has not been identified but folklore stories say she could have possibly passed away prior to her wedding, buried in her wedding gown and now haunts the place she was buried. Some locals claim she’s still searching for her lost lover. Next time you are wondering around downtown Culpeper late at night, maybe you can pass by the graveyard to see if you find the bride ghost wondering the grounds too.
