    Greenwood was on the 1500-acre property of William Clayton Williams, father of Lucy Williams, and was a gift to her upon her marriage to William Green. Later, the property was given to his son, John Williams Green, a justice of the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. In 1825 Judge Green received Major General Marquis de Lafayette and former President James Monroe at Greenwood during Lafayette’s celebrated tour as “guest of the nation.”

    1:50pm Lafayette arrives at and unloaded baggage at Rev. Alonzo Welton’s home.

    3:00 – 3:45 – Went to the Masonic Hall to address townspeople and gave a welcoming speech by John Shackelford. Lafayette then responded. After leaving he welcomed ladies and Rev. War Veterans from Davis down to Culpeper Street.

    4:30pm – 5:45pm – After freshening up at Rev. Welton’s home Lafayette headed to Bell Tavern for dinner.

    8:00pm – 10:00pm – Lafayette attended a ball at the Masonic Hall after dinner then headed back to Rev. Welston’s home where he stayed for the night.
