Dinosaurs of Culpeper

Research contributed by: Karen Quaintance

According to the book, Dinosaurs at Luck Stone, in 1989, over 2000 individual dinosaur tracks were found in the quarry near Stevensburg, VA. It was one of the most extensive discoveries of the Triassic period. The footprints cover six acres of the quarry floor and are still visible today. Every year the Museum of Culpeper History sponsors a “Dino Walk,” a day in which the public can view the footprints. The dinosaurs known to have left the footprints are:

  • Aetosaur – plant-eating animal.
  • Phytosaur – semi-aquatic, quadrupedal, crocodile-like reptile.
  • Coelophisis – small carnivorous Theropod.
