Culpeper Train Depot Hauntings

Culpeper Train Depot

Originally built in the 19th century, the Culpeper, Virginia train station played a significant role during the Civil War transporting supplies for both Union and Confederate forces. This train depot has seen its fair share of war, tragedy, and untimely deaths, which many believe contribute to the reported hauntings.

Over the year’s visitors have claimed to hear phantom footsteps and disembodied voices as if someone if walking along the platform or inside the building. Reports of shadowy figures and apparitions near the waiting area for the train and on the tracks themselves made many believe these spirits could be those of Civil War soldiers and/or railroad workers who may have died in the area while the tracks were being built or during the war. Some have claimed to experience sudden drops in temperature, feelings of unease and phantom train sounds when there is no train on the tracks, particularly at night and in the early hours of the morning.

The Culpeper Train Depot is still an active transportation hub and community landmark. Curious visitors have been known to explore the area in hopes of experiencing its eerie history firsthand. If you are looking for a guided experience you can follow the Culpeper Paranormal Investigations group to join them on one of their annual Downtown Culpeper Ghost Tours too.
