Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer

(1839 -1876)
Born in 1839 in Ohio, Custer graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1861. He gained fame during the Civil War, where he was promoted to the rank of brevet major general at the young age of 23. Culpeper, Virginia was a significant location for Custer during his service as a cavalry officer in the Union Army.
During the war, Custer first gained fame in the Battle of Gettysburg. He served in the Army of the Potomac in Culpeper County, Virginia which became a major staging ground for Union cavalry operations. Custer was known for his leadership and aggressive tactics, which were instrumental in key engagements around Culpeper, including skirmishes and raids on Confederate supply lines. One of the most notable battles in Culpeper he was involved with was the Battle of Culpeper Court House on September 13th, 1863. This battle gave the Union troops control of Culpeper and the surrounding land. His success in these operations helped him rise quickly through the ranks. He went on to become involved in the western campaigns, which culminated in his infamous role in the Battle of Little Bighorn where he ultimately met his death.
