DESCRIPTION:Since 2015\, the Museum of Culpeper History has partnered with the local Luck StoneQuarry to provide a public access day to view Culpeper’s famous dinosaur footprints! More than 215 million years ago\, during the Triassic Period\, giant beasts roamed the region that we call home today. Then\, in 1989\, evidence of their existence was discovered at the bottom of the quarry. Explore the largest quantity of dinosaur footprints discovered in North America on this special day.\nVehicle passes are available for hourly timed tours. $50.00 per vehical. Each pass provides entry to one vehicle and its occupants. Due to limited space in the parking area\, vehicles must be no larger than a 15-passenger van. Each pass will also provide FREE admission to the Museum of Culpeper History in downtown Culpeper that same day.\nThis is a very popular program\, and ticket availability is limited. Vehicle passes are restricted due to the limited parking available at the dinosaur track site. On average\, approximately 250 passes are available each day. The demand for tickets is great\, and tickets sell out very quickly each year!\nPasses for tours on Saturday\, May 2\, will be available for sale to the general public through our online ticketing platform on Saturday\, April 4.\nMuseum members at the Family level or above will have early access to purchase passes for tours on Friday\, May 1. This six-part\, 12-hour documentary explores our nation’s founding struggle and the eight-year War for Independence.\nEach gathering will feature casual group discussions to share observations and insights about the information and ideas presented in the series\, with one episode covered at each meeting. SUMMARY:Culpeper Minutemen Reunion – Battle of Hampton and Great Bridge Tour
DESCRIPTION:This Culpeper Minutemen Reunion Battle of Hampton and Great Bridge Tour will visit sites which made the Culpeper Minute Battalion famous.  The Culpeper Minutemen played the key role in defeating British and Loyalists forces at Hampton and at Great Bridge\, which directly led to Virginia’s\, and America’s Independence. \nThis full day tour will leave the Museum of Culpeper History at 7:30 am and head to southeastern Virginia in a luxurious restroom equipped chartered bus. After a brief New Kent Area Rest Stop we will arrive at Hampton’s Mill Point Park for a Battle of Hampton SAR Anniversary Ceremony Event. After this event and learning about the Culpeper Minutemen’s first heroic actions at Hampton we will pick up sandwiches for lunch (lunch cost are on your own) and board the bus to the Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways History Museum and Historic site. We should arrive by 2pm and once there we will visit the museum and participate in a guided tour by the Battle of Great Bridge historian\, Patrick Hannum. We will leave Great Bridge by 4:00 pm and stop for dinner back in the Hampton area around 5pm (dinner cost are on your own) before heading back to Culpeper where we will arrive around 10:00 pm. \nDon’t miss this only chance to visit these Virginia Revolutionary War sites of 250 years ago by signing up for the “Culpeper Minutemen Reunion Battle of Hampton and Great Bridge Tour” on Sunday\, October 26\, 2025. They were Virginia’s largest and most consequential military force to aid in the liberation of Virginia from British Royal and Loyalists forces in 1775-76. \nOver 650 Culpeper\, Orange\, and Fauquier County men marched off this field providing Virginia its most indispensable riflemen at the victorious battles of Hampton and Great Bridge in 1775. Those victories\, and the later burning and conquest of Norfolk\, ended British Rule forever in Virginia. As a result\, Virginia became the first state to “Declare Independence” (on May 15\, 1776)\, much to the heroism of the Culpeper Minutemen. \nAt this Special 250th Culpeper Minutemen History Alfresco Dinner\, we are inviting everyone to join us in celebrating the occasion. That night we will especially be recognizing and honoring all descendants of those famed Culpeper Minute Battalion and Green’s Riflemen Company. DESCRIPTION:This “Minutemen” Culpeper County Leaders Tour will visit many of the most important historic homes and homesites\, while hearing important detailed stories\, of Culpeper County’s “Minutemen” leaders along the way. The Culpeper Minute Battalion was like no other\, as they were the only Minute Battalion in Virginia to fully form and then respond quickly and efficiently in a moment of critical need for Virginia. \nVirginia historian Jim Bish and Battles of Hampton and Great Bridge military historian Pat Hannum will lead the tour. This Culpeper County Minutemen Leaders Tour will visit Little Fork Anglican (now Episcopal) Church\, the only surviving Culpeper County colonial church\, as many of Culpeper’s Minutemen leaders attended. After leaving the church we will drive to Culpeper Rifle Company leader Captain John Green’s “Liberty Hall” home where we will learn about Green and the importance of his “Rifle Company.” After leaving Liberty Hall we will drive to Old House Vineyards for lunch (Lunch is on your own). From there we will visit Lt. Gabriel Long’s Bloomsbury homesite\, before heading to the Capt. John Williams homesite where we will continue to learn about these important Minutemen. We will then visit the homesites of Capt. John Jameson and Gen. Edward Stevens before progressing to the Masonic Cemetery (owned originally by the Lt. Col. Edward Stevens-Coleman family) where information about Ensign David Jameson will be shared. The tour will conclude by heading to the original Culpeper Minute Battalion muster site of Major Philip Clayton’s “Old Field” on his Catalpa Plantation. There we will talk about the muster\, including how and why it occurred\, and how unique it was\, before heading back to the Museum. \nThe Minutemen leaders from Culpeper County comprised unprecedented leadership including Edward Stevens\, who was a cousin of future U.S. President George Washington. Culpeper’s Henry Pendleton was the nephew of Edmund Pendleton (First and Second Continental Congress and Presiding Officer of the Virginia Conventions from July 1775-July 1776)\, and John and David Jameson were nephews to Virginia’s Revolutionary era Lt. Governor David Jameson. DESCRIPTION:This “Minutemen” Orange County Leaders tour will visit many of the most important historic homes and homesites\, while hearing important detailed stories of Orange County’s “Minutemen” leaders along the way. The Culpeper Minute Battalion was like no other\, as they were the only Minute Battalion in Virginia to fully form and then respond quickly and efficiently in a moment of critical need for Virginia. Culpeper District’s quick actions helped liberate Virginia from British rule by 1776 thus aided in saving the Revolution. \nVirginia historian Jim Bish and Battles of Hampton and Great Bridge military historian Pat Hannum will lead the tour. The Orange and Madison Counties Tour of Culpeper Minutemen Leaders will leave the Museum of Culpeper History by 9:00 am and will drive by the Lawrence Taliaferro’s Rose Hill home to learn about the Taliaferro and Spencer family. We will then visit the Taylor Family Bloomsbury homesite. The Taylor family of Bloomsbury connects Culpeper Minutemen Ambrose Madison\, Garland Burnley\, Charles Taylor\, Richard Taylor and Burgess James Taylor. After leaving Bloomsbury we will eat lunch at the Main Street Tavern in Madison (Lunch is on your own) before driving to private home of Minuteman Ambrose Madison’s Woodley. After Woodley we will drive to Madison’s Montpelier as Minutemen Ambrose Madison is buried in the cemetery. After leaving Montpelier we plan on visiting the homesites in Madison County of Capt. Abraham Buford and stop by Hebron Church before heading back to the Museum of Culpeper History. \nThe minutemen leaders from Orange County comprised unprecedented leadership including a brother to future President James Madison and a father to President Zachary Taylor. SUMMARY:The Road to Freedom Started Here: Fauquier County’s ‘Culpeper Minutemen’ Leaders Bus Tour
DESCRIPTION:This “Minutemen” Fauquier County Leaders Tour will visit many of the most important historic homes and homesites\, while hearing important detailed stories of Fauquier County’s “Minutemen” leaders along the way. The Culpeper Minute Battalion was like no other\, as they were the only Minute Battalion in Virginia to fully form and then respond quickly and efficiently in a moment of critical need for Virginia. \nVirginia historian Jim Bish and Battles of Hampton and Great Bridge military historian Pat Hannum will lead the tour. This Fauquier County Minutemen Leaders Tour will visit the Historic Elk Run Church site in telling the story of the important Keith-Randolph-and Marshall families. Five immediate family members\, including the Marshall and Keith families\, served significant leadership roles in the Culpeper Minute Battalion including Thomas Marshall and his son\, John Marshall\, who later served as the longest serving Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court in history. After leaving Elk Run we will visit the homesite of Major Thomas Marshall and birthplace of Chief Justice John Marshall. We will then drive to Warrenton to visit the Martin Pickett’s “Paradise” home in telling about the important Pickett Family. After having lunch at O’Brien’s Irish Pub in Warrenton (Lunch is on your own) we will have a drive by visit to the Blackwell Family Cemetery. The Blackwell Family was the most important family in Fauquier County at the time and which many family relationships involve Culpeper Minutemen leaders. We will then head to see the rarely visited Major Thomas Marshall’s home called “The Hollow” near Markham where the Marshall family\, including son John Marshall\, lived from 1765-1773. We will then visit the Marshall home of “Oak Hill” where both Thomas and John Marshall were living when they went to join the Culpeper Minute Battalion in September 1775. The tour will continue by heading back towards Culpeper visiting along the route Capt. John Chilton’s Rock Spring homesite and Capt. James Scott’s Clearmont homesite before returning to the Museum of Culpeper History. \nThe Minutemen leaders from Fauquier County comprised unprecedented leadership\, including future U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall and his father\, Thomas Marshall. Other Fauquier County Minutemen were closely related to some of Virginia’s most influential political leaders of the day\, including John Randolph\, Peyton Randolph (selected to preside over both the First and Second Continental Congress)\, Edmund Randolph (first U.S. Attorney General)\, and future U.S. President Thomas Jefferson. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, September 2\, at 6:30 PM as the museum continues its lecture series! \nMany of us are aware that food and gasoline were rationed in the United States during World War II\, but did you know that bicycles and typewriters were rationed\, too? American industry shifted from consumer to wartime production for the war effort\, limiting Americans’ ability to purchase appliances\, automobiles\, and a number of otherwise common consumer goods. Ration stamps and books were printed to ensure that goods were equitably distributed for Americans to survive\, while also supplying the armed forces who were fighting on two fronts\, thousands of miles away. Local collector\, author\, and historian Matt DiPalma will showcase a selection of his original World War II ephemera\, documents\, ration cards\, and ration books\, and explain what made rationing different in Culpeper and the U.S.\, compared to other nations during the war. \nThis program will be held at the museum. It’s an event like no other\, and we want you to be there! \nThe Culpeper Wizarding Express Mini Escape Room! \nYou have taken the Culpeper Wizarding Express to the World Hexball Championships\, only to realize you left your lucky scarf on the train. You and your friends quickly dash back to the caboose\, where lost items are collected\, in the hopes of finding it. Unfortunately\, in your search\, the door locks trapping you inside. Can you find your lucky scarf and unlock the door before the train leaves the station? \nTaking place in an old caboose located in front of the museum\, you and your friends will have 30 minutes to try and solve several puzzles to find your lucky scarf and get out! \nThis escape room is recommended for individuals over the age of 10. Of course\, you know your children better than we do\, so younger people are allowed to participate\, but they may or may not find the experience engaging. \nAll participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The adult must have their own ticket or be 1 of the 6 for a group ticket. \nYou should plan on arriving about 5 minutes before your scheduled time. The puzzle will begin at the scheduled time. Because we need time between groups to reset and clean the room\, we have to start the clock on time. \nAll you need to bring are your wits and a sense of adventure. You will not need any tools; everything you need to solve the puzzles will be in the room. \n*Please note that the caboose is NOT handicap accessible. \n*It is an enclosed space with no electricity\, and it may become hot\, especially during the afternoon. \nEfforts will be made to try and keep the temperature down\, but be prepared for it to be warm inside. \nSpace is extremely limited\, and advanced registrations are required. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, July 1\, at 6:30 PM as the museum continues its lecture series! \nDuring Virginia’s struggle for independence in 1775\, Virginia’s Third Convention established Sixteen Virginia Military Districts\, including the Culpeper District (Counties of Orange\, Culpeper\, and Fauquier). Culpeper’s District quickly formed the Culpeper Regular Rifle Company and Minute Battalion in the Fall of 1775\, becoming the only fully manned combined Regular Rifle Company and Minute Battalion in Virginia. Culpeper’s quick actions in Virginia’s time of need\, more than any other portion of Virginia\, helped liberate Virginia from British rule by 1776\, thus aiding in saving the Revolution. How did they do it when other regions of Virginia could not? This presentation focuses on the important leadership within the Culpeper District\, which defined the Culpeper District as “The First to Organize\, First to Fight\, and First to Win.” \nThis program will be held at the museum. SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening Reception Culpeper Hosts a Hero: Lafayette in Culpeper
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Culpeper History presents Culpeper Hosts a Hero\, the first exhibit to highlight General Lafayette’s historic visit to our town in August 1825. Rarely noted in official records of his tour of the United States\, the Frenchman’s short stop in Culpeper was documented in detail by Capt. Philip Slaughter\, Culpeper native and Revolutionary War veteran. Slaughter’s diary provides a rare glimpse of the General’s itinerary\, the numerous activities organized to honor the “Guest of the Nation\,” and those individuals who arranged the whirlwind of events. The exhibit includes an annotated map of Culpeper showing three locations which hosted events for the General and his entourage on August 22nd. \nThe exhibit explores this honorable man\, his contributions to the young nation\, and his life-long affection for his adopted country. Beyond the unprecedented reception he received during his 13-month tour of the United States in 1824-25\, Lafayette’s visit was celebrated in Culpeper during the 1925 Centennial\, and even today\, in the Bicentennial festivities across the eastern and southern states during the last year and half. \nA reception to open Culpeper Hosts a Hero will be held Saturday\, June 28th\, from 5 – 7 pm. Enjoy period music and refreshments – including wines provided by Mountain Run Winery and toddy tastings hosted by the Long and Hansen families. Period costumes are encouraged! \nThose wishing to attend the opening reception are requested to RSVP by June 25.

Learn about the Civil War beginnings of the cemetery and the stories of men and women buried there\, including a D-Day (June 6\, 1944) casualty\, a Vietnam War Navy Cross recipient\, and an Air Force Thunderbirds pilot.\nThe tour will start from the Culpeper National Cemetery Administration Building (305 US Avenue\, Culpeper) parking lot at 10 AM on Saturday\, May 17.\nParticipants should wear comfortable shoes\, bring their own water\, and dress appropriately for weather conditions. DESCRIPTION:Explore the largest quantity of dinosaur footprints discovered in North America! Each year the Museum partners with the local Luck Stone Quarry to provide a public access day to view Culpeper’s famous dinosaur footprints! More than 215 million years ago\, giant beasts roamed the region we call home today. Then\, in 1989\, evidence of their existence was discovered at the bottom of the quarry. \nThis year’s annual DinoWalk will be held Friday AND Saturday\, May 2-3\, 2025! \nVehicle passes are $50.00 and are available for hourly timed tours. Each pass provides entry to one vehicle and its occupants. Due to limited space in the parking area\, vehicles must be passenger van size or smaller. DESCRIPTION:Explore the largest quantity of dinosaur footprints discovered in North America! Each year the Museum partners with the local Luck Stone Quarry to provide a public access day to view Culpeper’s famous dinosaur footprints! More than 215 million years ago\, giant beasts roamed the region we call home today. Then\, in 1989\, evidence of their existence was discovered at the bottom of the quarry. \nThis year’s annual DinoWalk will be held Friday AND Saturday\, May 2-3\, 2025! \nVehicle passes are $50.00 and are available for hourly timed tours. Each pass provides entry to one vehicle and its occupants. Due to limited space in the parking area\, vehicles must be passenger van size or smaller. Each pass will also provide family admission to the Museum of Culpeper History in downtown Culpeper for FREE. \n·    Passes will be available ONLINE ONLY through Eventbrite. \n·    Sorry\, we are unable to take advance registrations! \n·    PLEASE NOTE\, due to limited parking on-site\, passes are limited and sell out very quickly! \n·    Member Only passes for Friday\, May 2 available for online purchase on April 5. \n·    General public passes for Saturday\, May 3 available for online purchase on April 12. \nOrder a t-shirt in the size you want in advance! Shirts are available for sale on site\, but our popular sizes sell out quickly!! T-shirts will be available for pick-up at the event or the museum.

Learn about the people\, places\, and events shaped by Culpeper’s patriots and see how these activities were written into the Declaration of Independence\, the Bill of Rights\, and other founding documents in this walking tour of downtown led by staff and volunteers of the Museum of Culpeper History. Stories include the Culpeper Minute Men\, religious liberty\, and western expansion. \nAttendees should bring water\, wear comfortable footwear and dress appropriately for weather conditions. Tours will be held rain or shine unless otherwise advertised.

DESCRIPTION:This summer is the 250th anniversary of the creation of the Culpeper Minutemen militia. Join us as local historian Dennis Loba discusses the typical clothing\, weapons\, and accouterments worn and used by local colonists before and at the beginning of the American Revolution. \nThis program will be held at the museum. SUMMARY:Battle of Kelly's Ford Guided Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join John Christiansen\, Executive Director of the Museum of Culpeper History\, for a guided combination driving/ walking tour of sites on the Kelly’s Ford battlefield on Saturday\, March 16. The tour will start at 9:30 AM at the C.F. Phelps WMA boat ramp parking lot at 6430 Kellys Ford Road in Remington. The tour is expected to last three hours and will include three stops around the battlefield with short walks of up to 3/4 mile at each location.\n\nPLEASE NOTE:\nThe driving tour will be via carpool.\nWalking areas contain uneven\, at times steep\, potentially difficult and rugged terrain. Trails are unpaved wood trails and are potentially muddy and slippery. Attendees should bring water\, wear comfortable footwear and dress appropriately for weather conditions.\nThere are NO restroom facilities on the tour. The closest public facilities are located at the Southern States service station at the intersection of US 29 and Beverly Ford Rd. Please plan accordingly.\nDue to limited capacity\, advance registration is highly recommended.
