Central Virginia is known for its remarkable natural beauty and opportunities for outdoor activities. Culpeper is no exception, and visitors can easily include time in the great outdoors in their weekend getaways or day trip itineraries. One of the most convenient ways to get a breath of fresh air is at Lake Culpeper Adventures, just minutes from historic downtown Culpeper.

Located next to the charming Ole Country Store on Route 29, you can try your hand at a variety of watercraft activities while taking in the local scenery. With canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, and paddle boats available for rent, anyone can spend the day experiencing the lake without the hassle of bringing their own equipment.

Check in with the attendant at the dock to choose your watercraft, sign a waiver, and get fitted for a life jacket. They can also answer any questions you might have, although everything is beginner-friendly. Lake Culpeper also provides this video gallery to help you familiarize yourself with the watercraft if you’re trying something new.

If you have your own watercraft that you’d like to use on Lake Culpeper, there is a boat ramp next to the dock to unload boats or other watercraft from your vehicle. However, be sure to check the guidelines for allowed watercraft, as gas-powered boats are not permitted.

Once you’re ready to set sail, you can paddle around the lake to spot wildlife, go fishing, and make memories with family and friends. Activities are open to all ages, but you must be 18 years or older to rent your own watercraft. Younger adventurers are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

After all the rowing and paddling, you’ll probably work up quite an appetite. Head into The Ole Country Store for freshly made sandwiches, baked goods, or ice cream. The store also sells bulk ingredients and unique groceries, produced by local farms and Mennonite artisans.

If you want to spend more time by the water, the gazebo on the dock is the perfect place for fishing or lakeside picnics. It can also be rented by the hour for private events of up to 90 guests.

Open from late spring to early fall, Lake Culpeper is a great place to soak up summer sunshine or peacefully float through autumn foliage. Watercraft rentals are available until 6:30 each evening, dependent on the weather. Lake Culpeper opens at various times throughout the week, so check this schedule if you plan on any early morning adventures.

Lake Culpeper Adventures is an affordable way for the whole family to enjoy Culpeper’s natural beauty, with rentals at just $5 to $10 per hour or as a $20 day pass for select watercraft. Spend as much time as you like on the water and pay for your rental whenever you’re ready to head back to shore.
