This month’s first spotlight in our Celebrate the Legacy of Culpeper, VA’s Influential African Americans series is Dr. Elijah Barber Jr.

Elijah Barber, Jr. was born on December 20, 1898, in Orange County, Virginia, to Elijah Sr. and Lucinda Brown Barber. He was raised by his grandparents. At a time when educational opportunities for African Americans beyond elementary school were extremely limited—prior to 1948—the Barber family recognized the importance of education. Determined to ensure a brighter future for young Elijah, they enrolled him at the Jennie Dean Manassas Industrial School for Colored Youth to continue his studies. He later attended Armstrong High School in Washington, D.C., and pursued higher education at Howard University, graduating from medical school in 1930.

After earning his medical degree, Dr. Barber returned to Culpeper, Virginia, where he established a general medical practice, raised a family, and pursued his passion for racehorses. In 1931, he opened his medical office at 226 East Davis Street, serving the community with dedication and skill. Dr. Barber was the first and only African American doctor in Culpeper and the surrounding area, at the time.
