This month’s third spotlight in our Celebrate the Legacy of Culpeper, VA’s Influential African Americans series is The Lightfoot Family.
The Lightfoot family were influential African Americans in Culpeper, recognized for their contributions as merchants, businessmen, civic leaders, church members, and leaders in fraternal organizations. One of the family’s earliest patriarchs, Henry Clay Lightfoot, played a significant role in organizing the Antioch Baptist Church in the Town of Culpeper.
In 1870, Henry Clay Lightfoot, established Lightfoot Grocery on the Southside of East Davis Street. Although a devastating fire destroyed the grocery store and several other buildings, in 1892, Henry Clay Lightfoot demonstrated resilience by rebuilding the family business. He made history as the first African American member of the Culpeper Town Council, serving in the 1880s. Additionally, he served as a juror in the United States Courts in Alexandria, Virginia.
Following in his father’s footsteps, James Edward Russel “Jesse” Lightfoot also known as J.E.R., Henry’s son, continued to expand the family business, further solidifying the Lightfoot’s legacy in Culpeper.
