SUMMARY:Culpeper Minute Men: Icons of Independence
DESCRIPTION:The Culpeper Minute Men was organized in the fall of 1775in response to Governor Patrick Henry’s call for the Virginia militia to protect the capital at Williamsburg. Their uniform consisted of hunting shirts bearing the words “Liberty or Death” and a distinctive rattlesnake flag stating both “Liberty or Death” and “Don’t Tread On Me.” \n“That flag\, and the message it conveyed\, really ensured the place of the minute men in popular memory\,” said John Christiansen\, the museum’s executive director. “That phrasing will be revived over and over for the next 250 years. It was in the minds of the men who joined the reborn Culpeper Minute Men during the Civil War in what they considered to be another American Revolution. And the sons and grandsons of those Civil War veterans carried on that legacy into what would eventually become Culpeper’s National Guard company.” \nChristiansen explains that newspaper articles from the 1880s and into the early 20th century describe current members of the unit as all “direct descendants” of the original minute men. A short history and description of the flag – one of the first used by the patriot cause – is almost always included. \nCulpeper continued to host Virginia and National Reserve units after World War I\, but their identity as the “Culpeper Minute Men” eventually faded away. Older veterans created the Culpeper Minute Men Association to keep the memory alive locally\, but the minute men were becoming part of national culture. \n“America’s Bicentennial in 1976 saw an explosion of Revolutionary War commemorative items\, and the Culpeper Minute Men are featured in their fair share of plates\, postcards\, coloring books\, trading cards\, tumblers\, and more\,” said Christiansen. “The earliest example we have is a small pewter tray dated to the 1880s and made by a Culpeper jeweler\, probably for one of the Civil War veterans.” \nToday\, the Culpeper Minute Men are featured in the seals of Culpeper County and the Town of Culpeper\, and their name is invoked in local businesses and clubs. “And don’t forget the Virginia license plate design\,” says Christiansen \nThe exhibit will be on display through 2026. It is part of a series of events Culpeper County has prepared as part of the Virginia 250 commemorative programming. \n

The Culpeper Minute Battalion was like no other\, as they were the only Minute Battalion in Virginia to fully form and then respond quickly and efficiently in a moment of critical need for Virginia. \nVirginia historian Jim Bish and Battles of Hampton and Great Bridge military historian Pat Hannum will lead the tour. This Culpeper County Minutemen Leaders Tour will visit Little Fork Anglican (now Episcopal) Church\, the only surviving Culpeper County colonial church\, as many of Culpeper’s Minutemen leaders attended. After leaving the church we will drive to Culpeper Rifle Company leader Captain John Green’s “Liberty Hall” home where we will learn about Green and the importance of his “Rifle Company.” After leaving Liberty Hall we will drive to Old House Vineyards for lunch (Lunch is on your own). From there we will visit Lt. Gabriel Long’s Bloomsbury homesite\, before heading to the Capt. John Williams homesite where we will continue to learn about these important Minutemen. We will then visit the homesites of Capt. John Jameson and Gen. Edward Stevens before progressing to the Masonic Cemetery (owned originally by the Lt. Col. Edward Stevens-Coleman family) where information about Ensign David Jameson will be shared. The tour will conclude by heading to the original Culpeper Minute Battalion muster site of Major Philip Clayton’s “Old Field” on his Catalpa Plantation. There we will talk about the muster\, including how and why it occurred\, and how unique it was\, before heading back to the Museum. \nThe Minutemen leaders from Culpeper County comprised unprecedented leadership including Edward Stevens\, who was a cousin of future U.S. President George Washington. Culpeper’s Henry Pendleton was the nephew of Edmund Pendleton (First and Second Continental Congress and Presiding Officer of the Virginia Conventions from July 1775-July 1776)\, and John and David Jameson were nephews to Virginia’s Revolutionary era Lt. Governor David Jameson. Culpeper Minutemen were ancestors to later American heroes\, including Union General John Buford (Gettysburg)\, General George Patton (World War II)\, and General Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller (Marine Corps – Korea). \nDon’t miss the chance to visit Culpeper’s historic homes and homesites and to learn about Culpeper County’s heroes of 250 years ago by signing up for this one-time “The Road to Freedom Started Here: Culpeper County Minutemen Leaders Tour” on Friday\, October 24\, 2025. Commerce St\, Culpeper\, and return by 4:30 p.m. The cost for the all-day tour is $50 with lunch at Old House Vineyards (Pay on your own)\, as we will be visiting both public and private historic sites associated with Culpeper County Minutemen leaders. DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Museum History Alfresco Annual Fundraiser and Culpeper Minutemen Descendant Reunion Dinner will be held at Yowell Meadow Park on Saturday\, October 25\, from 5:00pm-9:00pm \nThis is a once in a lifetime event to honor those who gave us the way of life we enjoy today! \n\nEnjoy colonial music by Colonial Faire\nSip wine or beer from Mountain Run Winery and Old House Vineyards\nFeast on our catered buffet by Distinguished Engagements\nOn-site bidding of an assortment of exciting products and\nexperiences in our silent auction\nLearn about the rich history of the Culpeper Minute Battalion\nOur Keynote Speaker will be Virginia Revolutionary War historian Dr. Patrick Hannum.\n\nYowell Meadow Park 250 years ago was Virginia’s largest muster and drill site where the Culpeper Rifle Company and the Culpeper Minute Battalion deployed for the Revolutionary War. They were Virginia’s largest and most consequential military force to aid in the liberation of Virginia from British Royal and Loyalists forces in 1775-76. \nOver 650 Culpeper\, Orange\, and Fauquier County men marched off this field providing Virginia its most indispensable riflemen at the victorious battles of Hampton and Great Bridge in 1775. Those victories\, and the later burning and conquest of Norfolk\, ended British Rule forever in Virginia. As a result\, Virginia became the first state to “Declare Independence” (on May 15\, 1776)\, much to the heroism of the Culpeper Minutemen. \nAt this Special 250th Culpeper Minutemen History Alfresco Dinner\, we are inviting everyone to join us in celebrating the occasion. That night we will especially be recognizing and honoring all descendants of those famed Culpeper Minute Battalion and Green’s Riflemen Company. Countless men who marched from this site in 1775 did not live to see the war’s end including two Culpeper Minutemen Captains\, John Chilton and James Scott. \nBecause this field is so hallowed\, we felt it so important for the 250th remembrance dinner to be held here\, on Virginia’s largest muster and deployment site of the Revolution. \nPLEASE JOIN US! \nIndividual Seats are $100 per person. Or sponsor a private table for 8 at the Benefactor\, Sustainer\, or Host level starting at $1000. \nOrder by October 13th! \nBusiness Casual Attire \nWe request that ladies wear flat shoes due to the uneven grounds. \nFor questions\, please contact Lee Langston-Harrison\, Interim Director\, Museum of Culpeper History at (540) 829-5954.
