Get your hands dirty with hands-on\, family-friendly activities!\nThis event is free and open to the public. No registration is required. Check in at the Historic Germanna Visitor Center in Locust Grove to receive a timed ticket to access the archaeology site. The last timed ticket will be given at 3:00pm.

SUMMARY:Archaeology in Action at Historic Germanna - Public Dig Day
DESCRIPTION:Historic Germanna is once again excited to invite the public to see archaeology in action! On Saturday\, August 3\, 2024\, from 10am to 4pm\, our unique archaeological dig sites in Locust Grove will be open to the public. Get behind the scenes and meet Germanna’s archaeology team to learn more about this summer’s work in the field\, including efforts to unearth the original Spotsylvania Courthouse. This is the last opportunity this year to visit our excavation site\, which is only open a few times a season. \nGermanna’s archaeology site encompasses the ruins of the “Enchanted Castle” – home of Virginia’s Colonial-era Governor\, Alexander Spotswood – as well as the potential sites of the 1714 Fort Germanna that was constructed by the first German immigrants to The New World and the original Spotsylvania Court House. \nAdmission is free\, but due to limited parking at the dig site\, guests will be provided timed access passes on a first come\, first served basis. Guests should check in at the Historic Germanna Visitor Center at 2062 Germanna Highway\, Locust Grove\, 22508. There\, you will receive a timed ticket to access the archaeology site. The last timed ticket will be given at 3:00pm. \nEvent rain or shine unless severe weather.
