The screening of the movie “Glory” is scheduled for Saturday, 12 July at 2:00 PM. There will be a panel discussion regarding the movie, following the showing, the audience will be given an opportunity to ask questions. This event in Culpeper will feature reenactors and a crew member from the movie. Following the Battle of Antietam, Col. Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick) is offered command of the United States’ first all-black regiment, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, made up of some Northern freedmen and some escaped slaves. With junior officer Cabot Forbes (Cary Elwes), Shaw puts together a strong and proud unit, including the escaped slave Trip (Denzel Washington) and the wise gravedigger John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman). In his review,, Roger Ebert said it was up to the troops themselves to convince Shaw that they can fight – and along the way they also gently provide him with some insights into race and into human nature, a century before the flowering of the civil rights movement.
