Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick) is offered command of the United States’ first all-black regiment, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, made up of some Northern freedmen and some escaped slaves. With junior officer Cabot Forbes (Cary Elwes), Shaw puts together a strong and proud unit, including the escaped slave Trip (Denzel Washington) and the wise gravedigger John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman). In his review,, Roger Ebert said it was up to the troops themselves to convince Shaw that they can fight – and along the way they also gently provide him with some insights into race and into human nature, a century before the flowering of the civil rights movement.
