- On Friday October 18, Historic Germanna will once again open the gates to Historic Salubria for a special, after-hours Halloween event. Amidst the eerie glow of candles, lanterns, and carved pumpkins, explore the 18th century plantation house in a new light.
Historic Salubria has loomed over the rolling hills of Culpeper County for over 250 years. If you dare, step inside one of myths and lore, stories and legends, of Historic Salubria’s compelling past. Join costumed interpreters as they lead you through various macabre tales that have been weaved throughout Salubria’s history. Hear about farce and fable, truth and tale – all of which make up the fabric of Salubria.
Each tour will begin on the hour, with the first tour at 6pm and the last one at 9pm. Tickets are required and can be purchased via Eventbrite. The cost is $15 per adult and $5 per child; however, due to the nature of some of the stories, we recommend that this event is for children ages 12 and up.

About Historic Salubria
Historic Salubria, built in 1757 for Reverend John Thompson and Butler Brayne, widow of Alexander Spotswood, is an exemplary Georgian brick home crafted by free and enslaved artisans. Preserved in its original state, Salubria offers a glimpse into 18th-century architecture and life. Donated by the Grayson family in 2000, Salubria now serves as a public history site, sharing local and national stories through tours, events, and partnerships.
About Historic Germanna
Chartered in 1956 to preserve the heritage of the earliest organized settlements of Germans in Virginia, in 2023, our nonprofit rebranded as Historic Germanna to reflect a significantly expanded focus on the lives of Indigenous peoples, English Colonists, descendants of early German immigrants, and African American communities in the Germanna region. Our programs span outdoor recreation and conservation, education, archaeology, historic preservation, genealogy, and tourism. Today, we are about uncovering and deepening our understanding of the past through archaeological digs, nature trails, research, dynamic education programs and events, exhibits, and more.
Historic Germanna is working toward a future in which the Germanna region is widely recognized as a unique place that connects diverse stories through shared heritage and cultural and environmental significance, fostering a sense of belonging, learning, and inspiration for all.
