Nestled in the heart of Virginia’s Piedmont region, Culpeper, VA may not be the first place that comes to mind when one thinks of country music, but its history is intertwined with the genre’s development in surprising ways. From its rich cultural heritage to the sounds that have echoed through its countryside, Culpeper holds a special place in the story of country music in Virginia.
In the late 1950s, a humble stage tucked beneath a canopy of trees came to life with music. This was Legion Park, once a buzzing venue behind American Legion Post 330 on Rixeyville Road in Culpeper. Throughout the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, legends like Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, and George Jones graced the stage. However, by the 1990s, the park’s vibrant music scene had faded, leaving behind memories of its golden years. Local reporter, Allison Brophy Champion with the Culpeper Star Exponent, recently published a story about a group of local veterans working to bring the music back.
