January in Culpeper


Winter has arrived and there are great opportunities to get out and about in Culpeper. From our live music events at area breweries and restaurants to DIY fun and free movies, it’s easy to find fun in our neck of the woods.

January 9 – “Birdie, It’s Cold Outside” is the theme of the day at Wine & Design. Paint a pair of love birds – cardinals – sweetly encircled with birch branches on a snowy evening. Registration required.

January 10 and 24 – Wet your whistle and then croon at the moon at Beer Hound Brewery. Karaoke night is a great time to be heard and hear others while sampling the latest craft beer.

January 10 – It’s a musical Friday at National Audio-VisualConservation Center, Packard Campus! Starting at 7:30 p.m., catch musical highlights from “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” (1967-1969) and “The Hollywood Palace” (1964 to 1970) – for free!

January 11 – Kids’ classic, “Balto,” was released in 1995 and features Kevin Bacon as the voice of Balto, Bridget Fonda as the voice of Jenna, and Phil Collins as the voices of Muk and Luk. “Balto” will be shown for free at 2 p.m. at the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center, PackardCampus. Rated G.

January 11 – It’s a William S. Hart double feature Saturday night at the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center, Packard Campus. Start the evening with “Blue Blazes Rawden” at 7:30 p.m. and follow it up with “The Return of ‘Draw’ Egan.”

January 11 – Dreaming of a warmer, saltier climate? Sit in on a “winter beach” painting session at Wine & Design to capture a rolling sea and snow-covered sand. Registration is required.

January 18 – Feeling crafty? Head to the Museum of CulpeperHistory to learn to make bobbin lace. You’ll wind your own bobbin and learn stitches to create your own handmade lace. Registration is required.

January 18 – If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at stained class, here’s your chance. Register for the Stained Glass Winter Owl class at Wine & Design to make your own 5” x 8” owl.

January 20 – Learn to handknit your own scarf at Wine &Design. The class begins at 2 p.m. and requires registration. Materials included in fee. Seemore upcoming events.

January 24 – Raven’s Nest Coffee House welcomes you and musical duo Wine Thief for an evening of drinks and warm acoustic music. 7 to 9 p.m.

January 25 – The Cold North is a father-daughter duo; a lovely ensemble that is quite warm, actually. See them play an array of stringed instruments when they play Beer Hound Brewery from a 7 p.m. Saturday night set.

January 25 – Unchained goes unplugged at Davis St. Pier for a Saturday night of acoustic rock and roll. The fun begins at 9:30 p.m. and rolls ‘til 1 a.m.

January 25 – The Museum of Culpeper History is hosting a workshop to help you learn to make needle lace. Two foundation stitches will be taught and registration is required.

January 25 – Learn tatting with a needle at the Museum of Culpeper History. Tatting instruction will include double stitch, rings, chains, and picots. You’ll make and take home your own beaded flower and butterfly. Registration required.

January 31 – The Brewery Comedy Tour has made its way to Beer Hound after tapping 1,500 other breweries nationwide. Bring a friend and laugh your socks off while sipping some of the best craft beer around.

January 31 – Loneseome River Band is an award-winning Bluegrass band that has “played the Opry” and plenty of other stages over their 37 years. Catch them at Grass Rootes in downtown Culpeper; only 100 tickets are available.

January 31 – Close out the month with a show by Tamara Mae & Friends at Davis St. Pier. 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.
