Culpeper is an easy getaway from Richmond, Washington, DC, and beyond. When you have 48 hours for a couple retreat, we have plenty of options to help you fill the time. Come experience a slower pace of life.
One of the most beautiful places to rest your head is Walden Hall Bed and Breakfast. Settle in and then soak in the views and solitude of the welcoming front porch. All of their rooms are lovely with en suite, but we especially like the Longfellow Loft, a private upstairs retreat complete with wet bar, fireplace, and in-room Jacuzzi separate from the expansive bathroom.
Head to Davis Street in downtown Culpeper, an unexpected stretch of nostalgia with locally-owned boutique shops, bakeries, and restaurants. Peruse the stores to work up a thirst; locally owned breweries are just steps away. Beer Hound and Far Gohn breweries are conveniently located in downtown Culpeper and staffed with friendly, knowledgeable craft beer enthusiasts. Order up a flight at each and hopefully find something you love at each, too.
A downtown dinner makes perfect sense. Seek out Flavor on Main for traditional Southern and American dishes served with flair. Art deco is the theme, complete with fun Prohibition cocktails like Bees Knees and Gin Rickey. A favorite entrée is the pickled fried chicken with black truffled mashed potatoes, roasted brussels, and red-eye gravy. They call it Southern Comfort and we do, too. You’ll rest well after this perfectly portioned meal.
If your trip falls over the weekend, you’d be remiss to skip the Saturday morning Culpeper Farmers’ Market in downtown Culpeper. Open 7:30 a.m. to noon, May to mid-November, you’ll find a delightful mix of local honey, fresh baked good, and possibly some pumpkin-spiced delights.
The afternoon is perfect for winery hopping and we have just the ones for you to try. Just 20 minutes away from Inn at Kelly’s Ford is Old House Vineyards, an exciting destination offering not only great wine, but also a distillery and craft brewery. Old House is one-stop shopping for those who enjoy a nice mix of adult beverages. While this beautiful place will beg you stay, we encourage to venture on!
Less than 20 minutes west is Mountain Run Winery, a true farm winery whose tasting room is actually in an old corn crib. If available, ask to taste the Elderberry Wine. It’s crafted with berries grown on the farm and only created in small quantities.
Ten more minutes west is Prince Michel Winery. You can’t miss it, thanks to the three giant wine glass art structures out front. Take a self-guided tour (or arrange for a private tour), shop their boutique, and of course, sample their wines. From Viognier to their Rapidan River series of uniquely flavored wines like peach and chocolate, you’ll find the one you love.
By this point you’re less than 10 minutes from your luxurious room at Walden Hall. Return for a refresher and then consider checking out a 7:30 p.m. movie at the Packard Center – for free! Movies typically run Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and titles are announced two weeks ahead of time. It’s a cool way to watch an oldie but a goodie and experience something uniquely Culpeper.
