A Rich Rail History in Culpeper
Culpeper’s deep connection to rail travel dates back to 1852, when the Orange and Alexandria Railroad built the town’s first station. The depots played a crucial role during the Civil War, serving both Confederate and Union forces. While the original buildings survived the war, the toll of time led to a new station being built in 1874.
By the 1980s, train travel had declined, and Norfolk Southern Railway sought to demolish part of the depot. However, dedicated citizens, along with the Town of Culpeper and Culpeper Renaissance, Inc., a certified Virginia Main Street organization, successfully fought to preserve and restore the historic site.
Today, the depot remains a beloved landmark, blending history with modern convenience. In 2011, the town installed Reel LOVE, a striking public art piece made from film reels, symbolizing Culpeper’s role in film and culture as home to the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio-Visual Conservation and the newly restored State Theatre. The sculpture has since become a popular photo spot, even serving as the backdrop for marriage proposals!
