Fort Germanna & Old House Vineyards Tour
Did you know the earliest organized settlements of Germans in colonial Virginia sits just outside downtown Culpeper? Join us for a tour of Fort Germanna, where you will learn about the German settlements and the house of Lieutenant Governor, Alexander Spotswood that made Germanna 300 plus years ago.
We will begin at the Foundation, which maintains a genealogical reference library, historical archive, exhibits and a database all dedicated to the 1714, 1717, 1730s and 1740s immigrants.
The tour will then travel across Germanna Highway to the active archaeological site known as the Enchanted Castle (Fort Germanna Site). Foundation Archaeologists will be on hand to show and explain current excavations as they search for the remains of the 1714 Fort walls. You can watch the excavations and even search the screens as the archaeologists recover artifacts from the different time periods.
Following the archaeological tour, we will head to Old House Vineyards & Distillery for a private tour and wine tasting.
