Adventure awaits you in the beautiful Culpeper countryside!
Whether your perfect journey involves a bike, a horse, a boat, or
just a great pair of hiking shoes, Culpeper offers wonderful places to
explore. There
are back
roads to travel, fish to catch, birds to watch, and rivers to float.
Culpeper boasts several pristine streams, rivers and lakes for fishing, boating, canoeing, or tubing. Spend an afternoon fishing for trout, catfish and more at Mountain Run Lake Park. If fly-fishing is more your style, check out The Castaway Company. They offer guide services and an Orvis-endorsed fly fishing school. Learn
more about fishing in Culpeper.
If you'd rather go with the flow than wait for the fish to bite, hop in a canoe
or kayak, or go tubing! The Rappahannock and Rapidan Rivers have something for
everyone, with boating sections suitable for everyone from novice to advanced.
The rivers remain virtually unchanged by civilization, flowing through Civil
War battlefields, abandoned 18th century gold mines, and ruins of an early 1800s
canal system. Birds and wildlife are abundant. The Rappahannock River Campground offers
great water adventures including canoeing, kayaking, and tubing. They offer daily
rentals as well as overnight camping along the river. Mountain
Run Lake and Lake Pelham offer another option for a day on the water. Because
they are part of the Town Water Supply system, no gas motors are permitted, so
a day floating on the lake
is relaxing, peaceful, and quiet.
Culpeper's scenic byways offer breathtaking views, fresh air, and a chance to
get away from it all. Whether you are on a bicycle,
motorcycle, horse,
or on your own two feet, begin your day at the Visitors
Center.
Pick up a map of the county and brochures about wineries,
battlefields, and other sites along the
way.
Take a Virginia safari! Several loops for spotting wildlife in Culpeper are included in the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail Guide. From bald eagles to butterflies, the guide will help you identify the birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians that you may encounter in your travels. This guide is published by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. You may also request a copy from them by calling toll-free 1-866-VABIRDS (1-866-822-4737) or ordering online through Virginia
Tourism.
